The story behind pintxos

You can find pinchos a lot in the North of Spain, in Pais Vasco, well known as the Basque country. They say that pintxos originally come from San Sebastián (Donostia). The story goes that in the 1930s there was a bar that wanted to promote their little sandwiches with a topping to the people that passed by. The goal for this promotion was of course to get people inside the restaurant.

The difference

The word pintxos can be written in two different ways. Pintxos with the ‘tx’ is the Basque spelling and pinchos with ‘ch’ is the Catalan spelling. In this text both spellings are used.
What’s the difference between tapas and pintxos? When you read further you will know! Tapas are mostly served at a small plate and cutlery is needed. Pinchos are a piece of bread with a topping and a stick through it. In the most pinchos bars you need to collect the sticks of your pinchos. When you are done eating, the waiter will count the sticks and will make up the bill.
