The village

You can find Jávea in the northern part of the province of Alicante and it’s part of the Marina Alta region. High mountains and hills surround the village. You can divide Jávea into three different parts: the harbour, the old centre and El Arenal. The old centre nowadays still breathes a medieval atmosphere because of the many narrow streets with their houses made of ‘tosca’. This sandstone is a typical stone in this area, used to build facades, Gothic windows and window frames. If you visit Jávea, you should definitely go to the old part of town and walk around the church. You’ll find many local tapas bars and restaurants in this area. Stroll through the small streets, get lost and enjoy the typical Spanish vibe in this cute village!

Back in time…

Jávea has a rich and fascinating history. North of this village, you’ll find the mountain Montgo. Several wall paintings were found in the caves of this mountain. This gives the impression that already in prehistory people were living in Jávea. Through the years a lot of different populations, like the Moors and the Romans, were living in the village. When you walk around, you’ll find different influences and styles. Around the 14th century, pirates often attacked Jávea. Because of safety reasons, the inhabitants decided to move inland. That’s why the old city center is not located at the coast.

El Puerto

Don’t forget to visit the harbour of Jávea! This used to be the place where mostly raisins were traded. Nowadays, you’ll find fishing boats but also bigger yachts in this harbour. You should go here for lunch or diner and enjoy some fresh fish in one of the good restaurants. Luckily, the harbour of Jávea still has its charm!
